I'm Giving A Talk On November 30th to the NYC Woodworkers Group: Using Rasps in the Woodshop

On November 30th at 7:30 I'll be giving a talk and demonstration to the NYC Woodworkers about "Using Rasps in the Woodshop". I'll have with me a decent selection of cabinetmaker's rasps, modelling rasps and riffler rasps from a couple of makers but the real point of my demo is to show you have fast rasps can be in shaping work and adding a sculptural quality to your work. A router can easily put a chamfer on a piece, but a rasp can not only put a chamfer on the same piece in the time it takes to find a collet wrench, you can also trivially sculpt that chamfer so it can wax and wane. Doing that by router is near impossible. On furniture softening corners and edges appropriately is a perfect use of a rasp, as is just shaping complex curves like chair legs. I'll also show some ideas on what you can do to trivially fancy up a square leg or a boards edge.

I am really honored to be the first guest speaker for the club, which has just started up and I will fill an important void in New York City. The club is meeting 7:00 at the Makeville Studio. It is great that this new group will be introduced to a hand tool that seems so insignificant compared to planes, chisels, and saws. I do own and use various files and rasps regurarly. I would like to attend but the 1740 mile trip there would most likely put me very late. Would it be possible for you to put togather a video of this material and post in on a future blog post?

This does sound interesting. Is there perhaps a book you can recommend that covers this, for those of us too far away to attend, but too impatient to wait for your video production. :)
